Dear Motorsports Enthusiast and General Public,
We write this letter, for the purpose of letting you (the public) in on the legalities and concerns which ultimately have directly affected our latest and last attempt to salvage the farm as you know to be “Cadillac Ranch Motorsports Inc.”.
First, let us give you a brief history of the farm. The Farm itself is owned by Larry and Holly Mahan who have 3 sons (Bob, Damian, Jeff) and a daughter (Heather). It is a beautiful 400 acre dairy farm on the outskirts of Rainer, Washington. The Mahan’s have had, and still have a great tradition and a long history of family farming. Throughout, the years the Mahan’s have had trials and tribulations in their quest to continue their great tradition. For example, in 1985 Larry had a tragic accident while farming this land, by falling through a hay mower and losing his leg and nearly his life. This created a huge obstacle for the family and a threat of losing everything. At an incredibly young age, with no time to waste and a huge burden falling over the family, the boys and Heather were determined to maintain the relentless tasks and everyday activities of the demanding dairy farm. As one can imagine, sacrifices of all sorts became the norm and the boys and Heather worked, out of necessity and survival. Consequently, this ONLY allowed for the oldest son (Bob) to have the time to attend Oregon State University, where he became educated while the others filled his shoes back home.
As we all know, the economic state of our country is crippling many; thus, alternatives (Cadillac Ranch Motorsports Inc.) came about as a means of survival and a method to cope with the current uncontrollable economic devastation. As farmers, we have a compounding problem; the bottom of the dairy industry has nearly fallen out! We as organic dairy farmers have lost our organic contract because the Wilcox Milk Industry recently went out of business. Thus, it forced us back into conventional dairy farming, where the prices were rock bottom this along with current downturns in the economy forced the sale of our milking herd. We did not just lie down and die, we continued fighting the good fight, doing once again whatever was necessary to save the farm.
Currently we are in the long process of raising replacement heifers, for the purpose of rebuilding our herd. In an effort to survive, we realized that we have the ingenuity and ability to create a place for fun family activities, at the same time while we were trying to rebuild our herd on this farm. Thus, we have provided the maximum potential for our land while at the same time still using the land as it was intended.
We generously opened our home to the public, by providing a Motocross Track, and a 4x4 section with a variety of events, in hopes that we can provide a much needed family and younger generation destination within our community, for many years to come.
It is important to understand, that for the last 30 years we have always allowed and will continue to allow riders, especially our family and friends, a place to ride on our farm. We strongly believe that is our right, as property owners and we will continue also to fight for the motocross riders. We have learned that the motocross participants desperately need a place for their activities and we feel it is unfortunate that more and more tracks are currently being shut down. Thus, we will continue to fight for the right to keep our track open to the public and by so doing providing a place for all to ride in Rainier, Washington.
One neighbor in particular just recently tried to create a problem by writing to the county complaining about the traffic. Politely, we went to his house and asked if there was anything we could do to accommodate his objections. We then moved our entrance, to show our consideration to his complaints. However, this action was not enough for the couple and it was made clear by their statement, “We don’t want it, and we will do all we can to shut you down”. Realizing other neighbors might want to voice their opinions, we took it upon ourselves to personally go door to door and talk with the other neighbors. It was the support and clarifications of other neighbors that revealed the inaccuracy of statements provided by the objecting neighbor (he works for the state and for some unknown reason is desperately trying to stop free enterprise).
Truly, it has been amazing and quite rewarding to hear and read that 99% of our neighbors do support the Cadillac Ranch and all of our activities here. The overwhelming amount of support from our neighbors and support from our town as a whole has been tremendous and for that we sincerely thank you. Nevertheless, because of the objections, we were issued a court date, and a temporary restraining order was processed against the Cadillac Ranch. This procedure from the county is evidently normal; however, the county certainly did not expect or count on a large show of support from both local and non-local parties. The county’s biggest question seemed to be, is it good for the community? Cadillac Ranch Motor sports Inc, strongly believes that it benefits our community in many ways; for example, our facility provides a choice for active outdoor recreation for all ages, it allows friends and family to spend quality time together. It also brings a new source of revenue for the merchants in the town of Rainer itself. It truly is a win, win for all involved.
We at Cadillac Ranch Motorsports Inc. would certainly appreciate it if you would take the time to us send a letter telling us of your feelings about the situation.
We believe a support letter, will help us provide proof that many others want and need our Cadillac Ranch Motorsports Inc. to survive and prosper.
Thank you so much and just know that we will not give up the right to share our private property with YOU. PLEASE HELP US SAVE OUR FARM !!
Sincerely,
Cadillac Ranch Motorsports Inc.
PLEASE HELP US FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT!!!!
